Early Game Strategy (0-2 Hours)

Your first 2 hours determine whether your factory scales cleanly or becomes a tangled mess. Here is the optimal opening sequence:

  1. Build 2 extractors on red and blue circles immediately. Do not wait until you need the second one. Shape demand scales faster than your ability to expand. Having a second extractor already running means you just connect a belt when needed — 10 seconds versus 2 minutes of backtracking.
  2. Research Cutter first, not belt speed. Many new players rush belt speed upgrades, but cutters unlock the ability to make new shapes entirely. Without cutters, you are stuck delivering raw shapes. Belt speed only matters when you have shapes worth accelerating.

Build a dedicated crystal processing wing with its own belt network. Do not merge crystal belts with regular shape belts — the speed mismatch causes gaps that cascade into factory-wide slowdowns.

Wire Layer Organization: Think of wires as a second floor. Build wire factories on an upper platform connected by tunnels. This keeps your main factory floor clean and lets you cross wire belts over regular belts without intersections. The tunnel system is intentionally designed for this — use it.

Decision Point — Crystals vs Wires First: Unlock wires before heavily investing in crystal processing. Wires unlock the tunnel system, which makes crystal belt management dramatically easier. Doing crystals first means rebuilding those lines after unlocking tunnels. Wire → Tunnel → Crystal is the optimal order.

Late Game: MAM Construction (12-20 Hours)

  2. Build a 2-layer proof-of-concept MAM. Before attempting a full 4-layer MAM, build a simple version that handles 2-layer shapes. This teaches you the routing patterns without the complexity of 4 layers.
  3. Standardize your module size. Design every MAM sub-module (cutter array, painter block, stacker chain) to the same dimensions. When modules are uniform, you can swap, replace, and copy them without re-routing belts.
  4. Add filter gates at every merge point. Without filters, the wrong shape-half enters the wrong processing line and creates garbage. A single misplaced filter can break a MAM in ways that take 30 minutes to diagnose.
  5. Accept imperfection. Your first MAM will have bottlenecks. Every MAM does. Ship it, measure where shapes pile up, and fix the slowest module. Perfection comes from iteration, not initial design.

Buffer Before Cutter

Always place a belt segment (2-3 tiles) before cutters. Without a buffer, shapes arrive too fast and the cutter skips every 3rd shape — cutting your throughput by 33%.

Paint Ratio Rule

1 Mixer serves exactly 2 Painters at full speed. Building 3 painters on 1 mixer creates idle time. Either add mixers or accept lower throughput.

Trash Management

Place a trash can at the end of every production line. Overflow shapes that can't be processed must be deleted, or they'll back up the entire factory. One backed-up belt = all upstream production stops.

North-South vs East-West

Keep raw material flow North→South and processed goods East→West (or vice versa). This orthogonal layout prevents belt crossing and makes expansion a straight line instead of a puzzle.
